51³Ō¹Ļās Green named Truman Scholar finalist

STARKVILLE, Miss.āA biochemistry major concentrating in entomology is Mississippi Stateās most recent national finalist for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship.
Claire Green, a Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College student from North Little Rock, Arkansas, is among the prestigious finalists from across the U.S. for the premier graduate fellowship for those pursuing careers in public service. Established by Congress in 1975, the Truman Scholarship carries the legacy of the nationās 33rd president by supporting and inspiring the next generation of public service leaders.
Green, a Louis A. Hurst Jr. Presidential Endowed Scholar, currently serves as the vice president of the universityās Speech and Debate Council and works in the universityās Pollinator Health Lab researching honeybees. Green intends to continue this research in graduate school at the University of Yorkās Stockholm Environment Institute in the United Kingdom.

āAll of my experiences at 51³Ō¹Ļ have combined to help me develop a deeper understanding of the issues facing bees and to put forward a policy proposal that I am proud of,ā she said. āI am pursuing the Cursus Honorum curriculum in the Honors College and these classes, which are smaller and more in depth, also challenged me to think deeply. I have had some terrific teachers and mentors who have pushed me and supported me.ā
David Hoffman, 51³Ō¹Ļ Office of Prestigious External Scholarships interim director, said Green is a model student committed to serving 51³Ō¹Ļ and the public.
āWe are exceedingly proud to see Claire receive this recognition,ā Hoffman said. āOf course she excels in the classroom, but she is also an accomplished and committed biochemistry and entomological researcher, leads multiple student endeavors on campus, engages extensively in sharing and building knowledge with regional apiculturists and is fully dedicated to facilitating positive change at 51³Ō¹Ļ, in Starkville, in the state and beyond. Claire is the quintessential servant leader that clearly fits the Truman Scholar mold.āĀ
The Truman Foundationās Finalist Selection Committee chose 201 students from 137 institutions to interview with the Foundationās Regional Review Panels between March 2 and April 7. The foundation received 743 applications from 288 institutions. Green advances to a March 19 interview in Nashville, Tennessee.
